From 6th to 8th of July 2026 Joana Azevedo, partner of un-icon, will lead the students of the workshop “The Angeiras Dilemma” organized by FAUP (Faculdade de Arquitectura Porto).
“Angeiras is a small fishing community near Porto. When imagining the future of this place, with ecological pressure affecting marine ecosystems and tourism taking over the Atlantic coast, architects face a dilemma.
What should be designed to support activities on land when the balance of marine ecosystems can no longer tolerate new construction or architecture? The outcome of this three-day workshop will consist of proposals addressing the continuous relationship between sea and land, with projects situated between water, rock, and sand.
Three groups of students will be guided by the architects Joana Azevedo (un-icon), Max Kahlen, and Francisco Adão da Fonseca, engaging with the ongoing research project Fishing Architecture. The workshop is part of the SEALabHaus project: Atlantic New Bauhaus Laboratory for Sustainable, Inclusive, and Beautiful Blue Tourism, Heritage, and Culture of the Sea, funded by Interreg Europe (EAPA_0029/2022).The program is aimed at master’s and doctoral students from different scientific fields, including architecture, marine biology, geography, oceanography, history, and related disciplines.”
